Abraham Maslow proposed the humanistic approach that focuses on the “psychological needs for love, self esteem, belonging, self expression, creativity and spirituality” (Coon and Mitterer, 2008), Maslow regards these needs as being basic like our need for food and water. At the top of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is self actualisation; which means the potential to be the best that we can be. Below that is esteem needs, then the need for love and belonging, the need for safety and psychological needs are at the base. These four constitute as our basic needs which we need to meet before we can reach our full potential (self actualization). It is for this reason that Maslow stresses that ‘some needs are more basic than others’ (Coon and Mitterer, …show more content…

Taking this into account the school and its members (principal, teacher, governing body etc) may still have been racist and still practiced racism hence this is why it took them so long to allow children of all races to be a part of their school. Their feelings towards non whites were probably very strong and dominant and played a major part in the schooling system. Therefore one can make the assumption that since this view was so dominant in the school students may have been influenced by it, they may have also adopted racist behaviour and feel differently towards non whites rather than welcoming them as a fellow student. This may explain why Alex had reacted that way to Ravi. Since Alex had been in a school that is predominantly racist the introduction of a new student whom is of different colour did not sit well with Alex and resulted in an unforeseen
