Racial Inequality In America Essay

Since the day the United States was founded and settled upon, there has always been a “race problem”. The problem has decreased, but it is still there. In the Early days of the United States, the South was for slavery, or mistreatment of the minority, and the North was against slavery. This led to a civil war. Today, the South doesn’t feel as strongly on the topic, but the issue of mistreatment still exists. Many minorities are discriminated against in schools and in the work place. Racial inequality is based on the many different races in the United States. Race is not supposed to be a deciding factor in deciding who to hire for a job or who to pick for your team in gym class. Racial stratification, however, offers better occupational opportunities, …show more content…
In reality, they come to better their own lives. “By 2001, more than half of the largest cities had more Blacks, latinos, Asian Americans, and other minorities than Whites”(Eitzen, Zinn, Smith 183). Blacks are treated poorly compared to whites. Whites are given better opportunities for education and for jobs. Even police, who are supposed to treat everyone equally, treat minorities poorly. “Studies show that police are more likely to pull over and frisk blacks or Latinos than whites. In New York City, 80% of the stops made were blacks and Latinos, and 85% of those people were frisked, compared to a mere 8% of white people stopped”. In 2009, 2/3 of the criminals who were given the death sentence were non-whites(11 Facts About Racial Discrimination). This is just wrong. Racial and ethnic inequality has a negative impact on many other elements of life such as education and employment. Students in schools are at risk of violent acts from others. Restrictions on minorities’ opportunity to succeed are often racially determined”(Beswick). Just because a person is a minority does not mean that they should be cheated out of any opportunities. They work just as hard as white people do. They want to succeed just as much s white people

“In 2011, 53 percent of those stopped were African-American, 34 percent were Latino and only nine percent were white and it was about the same numbers in the first three months of 2012.” Although statistics may show that African American and Hispanics commit majority of violent crimes that happens within a community, not every African American and Hispanic person will commit a crime or is a criminal. This factor is not a reasonable suspicion or probable cause for an officer to stop, question, and frisk everyone from these minority groups repeatedly to the point of harassment. Often time police…

Many people in America see racial progress in the country and see that racism has become a thing of the past. However, there still remains a racial wealth gap in the United States. According to the article, Oscar Lewis’s “culture of poverty” created the idea that African American families are “caught in a tangle of pathology.” Pathology is how a typical disease behaves; therefore, he is saying that the reason the families are in such a state is because of their own doing. This ideology is called post racialism.…

Ever since 1787, and even before, African-Americans have struggled to gain political, legal, social, and economic equality. Although some national and state government programs were constructed to help African-Americans with this perpetual problem, it is also the same state and national government policies that expanded this problem. In fact, this is still a problem that persists today. The national and state governments definitely have gone a long way in providing African Americans with political, legal and social opportunities; however constant setbacks have lessened their effectiveness. Beginning in 1787 there was an unspoken guarantee that all states had the option to decide whether or not they wanted to be slave sates.…

Eighty-seven percent of those searchers involved blacks and or latinos, many of them young men, according to the New York Civil Liberties Union.” “The Scars of Stop-and-Frisk” from the New York Times by Julie Dressner and Edwin Martinez. Many minority students in low income communities are at a disadvantage because they do not receive the same level of education that their white counterparts do. There are numbers to back this up and senior education reporter, Joy Resmovitsm said, “Seven percent of black students attend schools where as many as 20 percent of teachers fail to meet license and certification requirements,” (Resmovits). These numbers impact the students because there is lower academic performances and this leads to higher dropout rates. There have been laws that have tried to provide an equal learning environment for all races but with findings of research, they are anything but equal. It’s proven that students of color are not granted the accessibility to higher level education opportunities.…

There’s a remarkable and outrageous racial disparities in the criminal justice system. According the research Black lives Matter: Eliminating Racial Inequity in the Criminal Justice System by Nazgol Ghandnoosh, a recent investigation of the rates at which the Boston Police Department observed, stopped, interrogated, frisked, or searched individuals without making an arrest found that blacks comprised 63% of these police-civilian encounters between 2007 and 2010, although they made up 24% of the city’s population. Moreover, this study states; “Once arrested, people of color are also likely to be charged more harshly than whites; once charged, they are more likely to be convicted; and once convicted, they are more likely to face stiff sentences – all after accounting for relevant legal differences such as crime severity and criminal history.” A research table made by Bonczar T named Prevalence of…

n conclusion, racial inequality is still a big issue. After 100 years of slavery African Americans may be free and one of the richest people in the world, but they are still viewed as the inferior group in society. This is a huge problem because after the laws that were made in 1960 until now a powerful country like the United States still have issues that need to resolve. Racial inequality is currently one of the biggest social problems that plagues the United States and has been for most of our nation’s history. Some inequalities of the past have been phased out, segregation, racist laws, and various forms of discrimination, for example, but many inequalities either still persist or appear to be making a resurgence. Racial inequalities of today do not share many of the same extremes of the days of old, but rather we see limited job opportunities, limited educational opportunities, police killings of minorities, and the increasing hatred of those who voice their opinion on the matter. In order to better understand the impact that race has on many of life’s aspects, I will attempt to analyze how racial inequalities…

Many people in our country are poor, and the improvement in their lives that the ending of income inequality can bring them is great. For the most part this shifts demand curves from the incomes increasing and decreasing, negatively and positively. Some argue that our society here in America is set up to where the lower working class cannot escape poverty. We have provisions and burdens in our economy that will keep regressing the lower class.…

Students are treated through racial, social, and/or educational acts based on their backgrounds. Children get treated based on what their home-life is like and that is not a fair way to judge a kid because they cannot help where they live or how they were raised. A study being done about “The Depressing Effects of Racial Discrimination” by Cornell News Service, really shows how judging people on their race truly hurts them and has a long lasting effect on that human. Discriminating among others of different races puts them in “depression” and makes them get into a “negative mood”. Humans already have to go through enough hardships in life, they do not need the extra burden of dealing with racist people telling them they do not belong here.…
