A Horror Story “The Cask of Amontillado”
Reading literature helps people to broaden their minds and imagination. Edgar Allan Poe is one the most favorite American writers. Some people may think that his stories are very terrific, but each and every story hides a deep meaning. Readers are usually very impressed with the way he presents things, people’s feeling, relationship and friendship. The themes of revenge and betrayal obviously make “The Cask of Amontillado” a horror story. The pervasive irony of Montresor’s narration complicates attempts to understand his motives and other conflicts at the heart of the tale. Both men were obsessed with strong desire. Montresor thought of his motive, when Fortunado had a strong desire to try Amontillado. It is also important to note the fact, that Montresor has chosen catacombs for vengeance. He takes his victim deeper to catacombs and at the same time offers wine to show his care and warm Fortunado. The following quote clearly demonstrates the aspect of horror:
“We had passed through long walls of piled skeletons, with casks and puncheons intermingling, into the inmost recesses of the catacombs” (Poe).
The place in the vault horrifies the reader. The author describes each and every element of the catacomb so the reader can imagine the walls covered with nitre, which hangs like moss, Fortunado’s cough, which did not stop him and gave him even more desire to try the wine, thrown down bones, which formed a mound and the interior crypt where Montresor planned to bury “his friend” alive.
Fortunado was trapped and deceived. The detailed description of how the victim was fettered to the rocks helps the reader understand and realize Montresor’s terrific mockery and
