Poe’s story The Cask of Amontillado is among his most popular. The Cask of Amontillado is a chilling tale of revenge told as a deathbed confession. Many reviewers single out Poe’s literature work as coming right from his intuitive, pointing out not only how prudently he selected his phrases, words, and arguments but also the events that inspired the story. Poe did purposefully use his story as a form of self-therapy consequently illuminating at least some aspects of his life. Focusing on the victim, Fortuna is much more worried about drinking alcohol than his health, a sign of an alcoholic. Additionally, he marches cheerfully into his tomb. One can straightforwardly view The Cask of Amontillado as a story about a man being ruined by alcohol. The story makes the most sense when interpreted as a narration about the narrator overcoming alcoholism. Alcohol made a fool of the narrator caused him numerous injuries lastly bringing an unforgivable consequence (Poe, 216). The narrator eventually achieved the best over alcoholism, interring it with his family members in the tomb and moved ahead to live a long and happy life. The narrator is proud of this victory. In the end, the narrator eludes his destiny and triumphs over his alcoholism. The motive behind Poe’s focus on alcoholism in this story had a link with the impacts of alcohol on his life during the period he wrote the story.
