The Events Affecting Edgar Allen Poe's Life

The events of Edgar Allen Poe’s life definitely affected his way of writing. Poe suffered greatly in life, which made him a mysterious man who wrote mysterious stories. Many of them have personal reasons behind them, which explain why they’re consistently strange. Some themes in Poe’s life that merge with his writing were his madness, losing loved ones and alcoholism. If Poe hadn’t had such a hard life, maybe he wouldn’t be a writer, or maybe his stories wouldn’t constantly be about sorrow and suffering. To begin with, Poe was a mad man. His poor mental state was caused by the events that happened in his life, which crept into his writing and made them dark. For example, one story affected by his madness is called the Strange Case of M.Valdemar. It’s about hypnotism, death and everything between. One lost loved one was his wife Virginia. She died of tuberculosis, leaving Poe all alone. Not to mention, Poe wrote a poem called Alone. This was undoubtedly about losing Virginia and several others, like his mom who also died of tuberculosis. To continue, Poe wrote a poem called Annabelle Lee, also known as Virginia. Without the loss of loved ones, Poe wouldn’t have written such lonely poems. Finally, the last event in his life that affected his writing was his alcoholism. He was a broke, drunken man who lived a low class life. Poe write a story called the Cask of Amontillado, which was affected by his alcoholism. This story even has alcohol as one of the main themes in it. Poe most likely drank to take away the pain of his own life and his many losses, but the theme of alcohol occurred in much of his writing.
