The Guilt that Drives Insanity There has been many cases that haven’t been answered by anyone of why one tends to murder something or someone. The human mind works in mysterious ways and each of us don’t actually know what goes on in another person’s human mind until we let each other know. We all have a breaking point that makes us commit errors, but for some of us it goes just a little too far. After reading the stories, “The Black Cat”, “The Tell-Tale Heart”, and “The Cask of Amontillado” we learn of how far a person goes when they are insane. Many don’t know of how serious a case is when someone has insanity, it’s the state of being mentally ill full with madness that can cause you to commit a crime. The main character which is Montressor, kills Fortunato because of something he said to him so he wanted to get “revenge”. One of the quotes that best shows Montresor’s insanity is when he says, “I placed my hand upon the solid fabric of the catacombs, and felt satisfied. I reproached the wall. Ii replied to the yells of him who clamouered. I reechoed, I aided, I surpassed them in volume and in strength. I did this, and the clamourer grew still” (719). He states “I promised myself that I would make him pay for this - that I would have revenge.”(715). He is being hurt and he has suffered because of him he says “Fortunato had hurt me a thousand times and I had suffered quietly” (715). In the story the insult is never specified or told. Fortunato was known for being strong but also for his love to drink. The author states “Fortunato was a strong man, a man to be feared. But he had one great weakness: he liked to drink good wine, and indeed he drank much of it.” (716). Montresor found Fortunato one night in the street and start talking with him, he noticed that Fortunato was already drunk. He stated “It was almost dark, one evening in the spring, when I meet Fortunato in the street, alone. He spoked to me more warmly then was usual, for already he had drunk more wine was good for him.” (716). He treated him as if they were closets friends. He started talking to Fortunato about wines, one of them was called Amontillado. He used this conversation to take Fortunato attention and take him in to his family graveyard. He used the loved of drinking of Fortunato so he can drag him into the grave and tide him so he can die there. He killed it and took revenge for an insult that he never
