John Herbert Dillinger was born June 22, 1903 in Indianapolis, Indiana. When he was young he was repeatedly in trouble with the law for fighting and petty theft. He quit school to work in an Indianapolis machine shop. He was arrested in 1922 for auto theft. He eventually joined the US Navy. He was assigned to the USS Utah. A few months later he deserted while his ship was in port at Boston. He was dishonorably discharged and returned to Mooresville, Indiana. While there he planned his first robbery with Ed Singleton. They robbed a local grocery store stealing fifty dollars. The two men were spotted and arrested the next day. Singleton pleaded not guilty, but Dillinger 's father told Dillinger to confess. He was sentenced to ten to twenty years in prison. On his way to jail he briefly escaped, but was caught within minutes. He embraced the criminal lifestyle while behind bars becoming friends with seasoned bank robbers Harry "Pete" Pierpont, Charles Makley, Russell Clark, and Homer Van Meter, who taught Dillinger how to be a successful criminal. His father started a campaign to have Dillinger released. He got one hundred and eighty-eight signatures. Dillinger was paroled May 10, 1933 after serving nine and a half years. He returned to crime soon after robbing New Carlisle National Bank on June 21, 1933 taking ten thousand dollars. On August 14, Dillinger robbed a bank in Bluffton, Ohio.
