August 6, 1945, American aircraft flew over Japanese soil and dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima. The detonation spread through the city instantaneously taking over 80,000 Japanese lives. Radiation exposure would eventually claim more lives that were not affected by the initial detonation. The United States would again drop a second atomic bomb on the city of Nagasaki, this explosion took another 40,000 plus lives. After seeing the atomic bomb devastation Japan’s Emperor Hirohito surrender on August 15, 1945, bringing the end to World War II. Some Historians and revisionists also known as people who study certain events and provide their own analysis from studies have been revising America’s view on the use of the atomic bombs. Some people claim that the United States did not need to use this atomic weapon to end the war with Japan.
A Top-Secret April 1946 War Department Study, Use of Atomic Bomb on Japan, declassified during the 1970s but brought to broad public attention only in 1989, found that “the Japanese leaders had decided to surrender and were merely liking for sufficient pretext to convince the die-hard Army Group that Japan had lost the war and must capitulate to the Allies (Alperovitz, 154). This official document judged that Russia’s early August entry into the war “would almost certainly have furnished the pretext, and would have been sufficient to convince all responsible leaders that surrender was unavoidable (Alperovitz, 155). “The study concluded…
