The suffrage movement and it’s internal division foreshadowed the persisitent disagreements along with women in Congress and along with women’s rights activist after the passage of the 19th amendement, which allowed the right for all American women to vote. Susan B. Anthony was an activist for women’s rights , she played a pivitol role in the women’s suffrage movement. Susan B. Anthony gave a speech after her arrest for casting an illegal vote in the presidential election of 1872, before the 19th amendment. In her speech it states “It was we, the people; not we the white male citizens, nor yet we, the male citizens; but we, the whole people who formed this union.” Susan wanted to aknowledge that the United States wasn’t put togeather by just anybody, but rather byall who wanted to build a united place to live. San francisco, in 1955 The Daughters of Bilitis, also known as the DOB, was formed by 4 lesbian couples, including Phyllis Lyon and Del Martin, which were known of being the first legally married gay couple in the U.S. Their marriage was voided 6 months later by the California Supreme Court. The Daughters of Bilitis was the first lesbian civil and political organization in the United States. The DOB followed by the homophile movement, encouraged it’s members to assimilate as much as possible into prevailing heterosexual culture.
