The Affordable Care Act The Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, was designed to provide Americans with reliable health security by forming improvements to the current health insurance system. This act was signed by President Obama in 2010 with the goal of assisting many Americans having proper healthcare that is affordable. Although the Affordable Care Act is designed to improve the quality of life for many Americans, it also poses many economic issues. These improvements to our health insurance system are designed to expand coverage, hold insurance companies accountable, lower health care costs, and enhance the quality of care for all Americans. The Affordable Care Act curbs spending through regulations and taxes to the U.S. citizens. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010 work together to expand Medicaid coverage to millions of low-income Americans and makes several improvements to both Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program. Obamacare has expanded Medicaid to all adults in many states, improving to seniors and those with long-term disabilities. This also benefits the employer by expanding coverage to millions of employees. An issue however for people who typically would not carry insurance because they cannot afford it will inquire a fee if they do not have insurance (Longley).
