The Effects of Sexual Assault
According to the U.S. Department of Justice’s National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS), on average, 293,066 victims are sexually assault or raped. So every 107 seconds another American is sexually assaulted. Summer has the highest rate of rape then the winter and fall, (Rainn). Any one at any age can be sexually assaulted. Sexual violence causes serious health issues. It also has long term effects on the victims mentally and physically.
A major problem with sexual abuse is mental instability. The idea of being forced to do something against someone’s will traumatizes the victim for long periods of time. Jill Messing (author of Factors Related to Sexual Abuse) states that, “Women who were sexually abused were

The victim then has to make the painful decision of what to do if they get a sexually transmitted disease or if they get pregnant. 1 in 3 girls report their first sexual experience as being forced, because of this it causes increased health risks (“Sexual Violence”). Many of the victims do not feel comfortable with telling their horrific experiences. while others do not want to be looked at any different than any other person. According to the World Health Organization, “Deaths following sexual violence may be a result of suicide, HIV infection, or murder. Sexual violence can also profoundly affect the social well being of victims; individuals may be stigmatized and ostracized by their families and others as a consequence” (149). “The perpetrator expresses power and dominance over the victim. Also, coerced sex may result in sexual gratification on part of the perpetrator”( “Sexual Violence”). There are very high rates of sexual violence and assault at the colleges but very little reports of them being reported. A majority of rape/sexaul assault victims are between the ages of 16 and 24. Statistics show that 1 in 5 college students have been sexually assaulted while in school. In college there are a lot of parties which alcohol and drugs are involved. According to the American Journal and Health Studies, most of the assaults involved women who have voluntarily consumed alcohol. Once they are under the influence they can not make rational decisions which leads to them having some sort of sexual relations with another person. Multiple universities and community groups are coordinating programs for the victims of sexual violence, and also services to help develop prevention
