Astronomy is all about increasing our understandings about our Universe through observing objects like stars, galaxies and other bodies which exist outside Earth’s atmosphere. Astronomers make observations of these celestial phenomena by collecting electromagnetic radiation. Optical telescopes e.g. the Hubble Space Telescope collect light whereas radio telescopes like the Parkes Observatory serve the purpose in gathering radio waves. Radio astronomers speciality study space by observing and studying radio waves in detail. Radio waves are a type of electromagnetic radiation and ever since it has measuring regions on the electromagnetic …show more content…
This is why the diffraction fringes of radio waves will be large and images produced will be blurry and of poor quality. To solve this problem radio astronomers have turned to interferometry. It is an advantageous technique since it can provide measurements of stars with a higher angular resolution unlike the single dish telescope. Angular resolution is the smallest angle between close objects that can be clearly seen to be distant from each other.
Karla Jansky’s and Reber’s contributions had proven to be a milestone in radio astronomy (their achievements and how they managed to detect radio waves have been discussed above) . Ever since countless discoveries in the field of radio astronomy have been made which would have not been possible without the core knowledge about radio waves that has been established by Jansky and Reber. Many of these discoveries are praiseworthy but some of the contributions made through a series of radio astronomical observations hav reformed our thinking about the
