In March of 1781, William Herschel found an irregularity while studying the stars. At first he believed it was a star, but it was moving. Then he believed it was a comet. It was an accidental discovery that due to the unknown origins of it helped lead to a greater motivation to learn as much as they could about it. Herschel, along with the help of many other scientists in his field, spent countless out hours and months studying the measurements, paths, and movements of this ‘comet’. In 1783, Herschel wrote to the Royal Society and said “it was not a lucky accident that brought this star to my view… it was that night it’s turn to be discovered. I had gradually persued the great volume of the Author of Nature and was now come to the page which contained a seventh planet… I perceived its visible planetary disk as soon as I saw it.” At the time, many believed that the discovery of a new planet was not something that was very likely to be true. …show more content…
Many were astonished that he was the one who had made the discovery since he was not an experienced astronomer. Finally in March of 1792, he cited his discover of his new planet, it even made its way to King George III, thus the planet Uranus is also known as the Georgian Planet. William Herschel’s discovery of Uranus helped lead the way to the discover of the other planets in the Solar System, it helped show that there are more planets out there, just waiting to be discovered, just as Herschel advised it was just that planet’s turn to be discovered, and he was just the one nature chose to find

According to Elizabeth Howell, a Ph.D. student studying aerospace sciences, one of Keck’s first major discoveries was finding an exoplanet around a star by detecting the wobble it produces. It was one of the first independent confirmations of a planet. Its next major discovery was in 2000 when Keck measured the motion of stars around a black hole in the center of the Milky Way galaxy which helped astronomers determine the exact center of the Milky Way. There were two large discoveries made by Keck in 2005. The first is when it found that the diameter of the Andromeda galaxy is three times further than thought having estimates of 220,000 light years across compared to the previous estimate of 70,000 light years.…

The Ancient Greek astronomers played an integral part in the construction of modern astronomy and our current understanding of our solar system. They were far from the first ancient astronomers; most of their work was built upon pre-existing knowledge from the Babylonians and Egyptians. However, what distinguishes the Ancient Greek philosophers from their predecessors was their attempt to not only observe the night sky but also to understand it. The Greek astronomers theorised the workings of different aspects of the solar system in order to both explain how it worked and to predict future movements.…

With such little knowledge about the universe and how it works, scientists for almost a millennium have been working to provide answers to some of the mysteries of the universe. How did human beings come into existence? Is there other life in our galaxy? These are just two examples of questions researchers’ debate often but unfortunately to this day in the 21st century are still not able to answer.…
