The definition of the word technology is “the use of science in industry, engineering, etc., to invent useful things or to solve problems”. Throughout history, there have been many technological advances. They were created to make people’s lives easier or, as the definition states, to solve problems. I am going to describe the most important technological advances made in the pre-modern and modern eras (1450-present). I will also explain how technological advances changed society for better or worse and what long-range effects they had on the world. The first technological advancement I am going to talk about is the printing press. The printing press was invented in 1450 by Johannes Gutenberg in Mainz, Germany. It spread rapidly throughout Europe and many other people were coming up with their own versions of it. The printing press was a very important technological advancement because it helped people become more literate. “Technical knowledge could now be made available in print very quickly and this meant that it was in the interest of the specialist to read in order to maintain his skill in his craft” (Roberts and Westad, pg. 682). It made reading material more readily available. It helped spread news about science and new technology. It also spread ideas faster and made a huge impact on the people.
