The 2 areas of study that I used were: ‘Texture & Melody’, ‘Timbre & Dynamics’ and I have also included ‘Rhythm and Metre’.

My link to the world music strand is through the use of the pentatonic scale which is a feature of Chinese music. I will also link it by layering my piece by using several different complimentary melodies and rhythms resulting in a polyphonic texture which is also a strong feature of Chinese music.

Q1

My composition is mainly based around the pentatonic scale, therefore it has 5 notes per octave. A strong feature of the texture and melody area of study. It is a Chinese themed composition. I used all Chinese instruments and timbre to create an authentic composition. Straight away at figure A I introduced my 8 bar melodic idea on the ‘slentam’, which is based around the pentatonic scale. Then I introduced the melody onto the ‘shamisen’ but this time added a percussion layer, to fit in with the texture and melody area of study. Next at bar 17 i introduced a canon, so I had 2 instrumental parts playing the same music, which is a complex feature of texture and melody. Coinciding with the canon i added my main 8 bar melody on the ‘shakuhachi’, which meant i had 3 layers which making it polyphonic. At figure C I brought in a drone, a feature of world music which was then present for the rest of the piece. It also introduced melody and accompaniment. Also at figure C I changed the time signature from simple 4/4 time to a more complex 7/8 time, which made…
