What is Pneumonia?
Pneumonia is a type of inflammation of the air sacs in the lungs. It can affect one or both of the lungs. Alveoli that are in the lungs may fill with some type of fluid, which can make it difficult to breathe. The most common causes of pneumonia are by viruses, bacteria or fungi. The most common bacteria type that causes pneumonia is Streptococcus Pneumonia.
How is it Diagnosed?
Pneumonia is diagnosed while taking different kinds of tests. Some of these tests are: Physical exams, diagnostic tests, CT scans, Sputum tests, Pulse oximetry test, and a bronchoscopy. While a physical examination is being done, sounds of crackling and bubbling while you inhale are a sign of pneumonia. During the diagnostic tests, the physician may take a chest X-Ray to see if there is an infection in the lungs. They may also take blood tests as part of the diagnostic test to see if there may be an infection in the bloodstream. The CT scan can provide a better detailed picture of the chest and lungs than a regular X-Ray. A sputum test is basically a test that examines your mucus to see what kind of pneumonia you may have. The pulse oximetry test will measure the level of oxygen blood saturation by putting a small sensor on your finger.
