My professor, Larry stern, once quoted Jeff Daniels (from The Newsroom) That “the first step to fixing a problem is recognizing there is one.” It is not until we stop looking at this objectively like some social incident, and more subjectively as a social problem. Professor Larry also once said that “the most consequential thing anyone can ever do it to do nothing.” Because by doing nothing you are agreeing with what is happening all around you. However, we also have to be very careful with that we do as well, because one action has one than one unpredictable consequences. For instance let just say you decide to buy some tuna to make tuna fish for you or whoever. And you decide to - unknowingly - by the brand “American tuna” because it’s cheaper than the rest and you’re feeling a bit patriotic that day. Although, what you didn’t know is that this brand of tuna uses nets in which trap dolphins (dolphins are known to swim with tuna because they are very social animals) and as we all know dolphins need air. So the inevitable happens and they drowned (disclaimer: I don’t know for a fact wether this brand does have dolphin free nets or not). What you could have done at the time is spend a couple extra cents for “Starkist” tuna which is does have dolphin safe nets -ooh, and a side note here: this brand actually do have those dolphin safe nets. Now you are not only making a social statement but if enough people do this then the “American tuna” company will spend the extra money to win back their customers since their revenue went down - oh and by the way this i’m not trying to advertise here. I implore each and every one you to do your research before taking any actions. It may not seem much in the beginning at first, but it will matter in the grand scheme of
