Evan, a senior in high school, is offended because of his school mascot, an Indian. Because of Evan’s Native American background after months and months of trying to get the school to change it the bullying that’s happening to Evan gets worse and worse. Eventually in the spring the bullying escalates to murder of an innocent animal, Evan’s dog. Evan knows who the culprit is because of the fake papered feathered headband underneath the dead dog.” My mother, on her knees in bloody grass, cradled Butch’s head in her lap and sobbed” (Carvell 124). This is the scene in the book where Evan’s mom discovers Butch’s dead body. “I’ve closed enough windows to know you can never look back” (“Carry On”12-13). This could help Evan in this moment because it will tell him that he can’t dwell in the past and that he has to move forward. Also it would help him to realize what was done was done and that he cannot change that no matter how hard it may be to realize. This act of anger is just plainly unthinkable, for a simple act of wanting to change a mascot the action that had taken place would just be unbelievable.
