Although I understand and respect many of my classmate’s views and points, I do not agree with them entirely. What I do agree on is that offensive names such as “Redskins” should be removed if that term really is that insulting. I do not agree names like “Indians” should be changed. I also do not believe that every “Indian” mascot should be removed. When people say that the Mascot is an unrealistic and stereotypical portrayal, they are right. Mascots are not supposed to be realistic. Most…

He and many others have tired abolishing some of the hurtful names but there are still too many left. Throughout the years, there have been many cases involving offensive mascots that have occurred, and many opinions have been formed as a result.…

In all sports, both creative and uncreative mascots give fans a symbol to rally behind. How often is this symbol inappropriate or inconsiderate? Due to the dominance of white culture in this country, certain age-old traditions seem to escape critique during the discussion of what is racist. One of these traditions is the incorporation of mascots into sports events. Opting for fierce or intimidating images, teams often use insensitive depictions of minorities, especially Native Americans. There…

The Indian Mascot When one thinks about Native Americans or Indians, they used to think about the first Thanksgiving, wars with cowboys, or even the movie Pocahontas. Today when one hears the word Native American, they think of controversial topics about the North Dakota oil pipeline, the drop out rates in Native schools, and of course whether or not the Indian mascot should be allowed. It all started back in 1912, when baseball’s Boston Braves adopted their team name. Next, the Cleveland…

So, why is it permitted that teams, such as, the Indians are able to use Chief Wahoo as their mascot?…
