The main characters William E. Dodd becomes ambassador to Nazi Germany for the U.S. and moves to Nazi Germany with his wife and two kids. Knowing how terrible Nazi Germany was and how people did not anticipate Nazi Germany’s future in the past, it was kind of nerve wrecking how Dodd’s family openly went to Germany and interacted with Germans and German political officials alike. The characters walked in to numerous traps that one would see the outcome of, and sometimes made decisions that me as a reader would want to question their credibility.
Henceforth on, the book picked up pace. Dodd and his family were soon starting to see the impact their mistakes and decisions had caused. Dodd starts to report back home the terror violence and total disregard for jews the Nazi government was showing at that time. Also Dodd also sees Hitler's true character and ruthless ambitions. If I were in Dodd’s shoes, this would all seem scary to me and more than certainly, very nerve
