While technology has given people a longer life span most elderly try to look for the good that had happened in their life. Carstensen’s socioemotional selectivity theory tries to explain that older people are mindful that the life span is very valuable that motivates them to look for emotional pleasure (Bengtson, V. L., Gans, D., Putney, N. M., & Silverstein, M. 2008). Looking back through your past you can find ways that you have influenced people and where they made a difference. When one is happy with their life gives them a sense of satisfaction. Reviewing how the individual lived plays a role in how seniors age triumphantly.…
We often times associate retirement with an excessive amount and spare time. I can only assume that contributing to society is a wish or desire we all wish to fulfill, regardless of our age. The results in this study made me realize that a successful part of aging may also include challenging oneself and learning something new each and every day, whether it be inside a classroom or though lived experiences. For many reasons individuals may not be able to attain the levels of education they would have wanted to. Life does happen, after all.…

Portrayal of the Older Adult in the Humanities In today’s world, there is a great misunderstanding about the aging process and a plethora of associated myths. Many people have a jaded view of aging and the elderly in general, which may be attributed to the false portrayals and stereotyping of the population in media platforms such as movies, television shows, and novels. There is a great disconnect between the current generations, which is even more concerning in our “aging society”, meaning that in the coming years, those over the age of 60 will outnumber those under 15 (MacArthur Foundation, 2009). A report published by the MacArthur Foundation (2009, p. 2) summed this problem up best, “Too much of what passes for knowledge and understanding…
The “aging-out process is the tendency for youths to reduce the frequency of their offending behavior as they age” (Siegel Pg. 49). One of the biggest reasons I feel juveniles “age-out” of crime would be an increase in responsibility. This may not be valid for every individual, but with age comes an increased sense of responsibility. From family, work, school and friends, there are people that are counting on that individual to be a responsible, law abiding citizen within their respective communities. “As youths grow older, they take on new responsibilities that are inconsistent with criminality.…
The study explores how adults talk about and view their aging and or life. The results have shown that the most constructive way to achieve successful aging is to talk with others about positive experiences in life rather than grave issues. I completely agree with the results in the article because it makes perfect sense in everyday life. If you consistently talk about all the bad things in life with yourself and others you naturally engulf yourself in negative energy. Having a grim attitude all the time will cost heavily on your and others around you.…
Nurses have used life span theories to develop a multidisciplinary theory of thriving (Haight, Barba, Tesh, & Courts, 2002). Despite the fact that it is past the extent of any nursing content to address all parts of body– mind–spirit interconnectedness, attendants can utilize the utilitarian results point of view, in conjunction with data from speculations talked about in this section, to help more established grown-ups answer their own inquiries concerning aging. Nurses can challenge ageist generalizations and methodology the inquiry from an all encompassing viewpoint that recognizes the interconnectedness among one's body, one's psyche, and one's soul. Starting here of perspective, nursing can accentuate that despite the fact that some degenerative changes influence one's body with expanding age, one's brain and soul can proceed to flourish and even move forward. This model proposes that thriving is achieved when there is concordance between the person and the human and nonhuman environment, that is, when these three elements are mutually engaged, supportive, and harmonious.…
For this report I interviewed my great grandmother, Margaret Westphal, about the changes she is encountering within each domain throughout late adulthood. Last April she celebrated her 76th birthday and appears to be aging successfully according to John Rowe and Robert Kahn (Boyd & Bee, 2012, p. 462). Rowe and Kahn define successful aging as maintaining physical health, cognitive abilities, being involved in social and productive activities, and being satisfied with life. (Boyd & Bee, 2012, p. 462). When asked questions regarding the physical domain, several things my grandmother mentioned are common changes that occur in late adulthood.…
The healthy aging class lectures, weekly discussion posts, and elderly project videos helped me to engage more in learning. To be honest, I have never thought about the struggles of being an elderly and I did not know much about the elderly because I have never lived with elderly over age 65. However, being in this healthy aging class helped me to understand the struggles of being elderly and it also gave me some idea how to deal with elderly. As this class focus on issues that related to aging, I also have learned how to enhance elders’ well-being physically, socially, and mentally.…
Everyone in their life go through the stage of aging. It is a process of becoming older. With the increasing age, many people suffered from some kind of diseases, illness or injury. In 2010, 14% of Canadian people were aged but this rate will increase about 25% in 2030. The Canadian Medical Association provides their views that some people are not sure that they will enter into the health care services or not whey they will need.…
The process of aging raises causes of concern due to the increased risk of disease, and reduction of function ability and all around health. What if there was a way to increase longevity and health management as our bodies undergo this transition? Through the advancement of geroscience, these possibilities can now become reality. Geroscientists specifically explore the relationship between aging and diseases. There is a significant amount of evidence linking the cellular process our bodies go through while aging with the contribution to disease and disability.…
“Healthy aging is a concept used alongside related concepts such as active aging, positive aging, and successful aging. Raftered Fäggren and Wilson (2009) define healthy aging as “the process of optimizing opportunities for physical, social and mental health to enable older people to take an active part in society without discrimination and to enjoy an independent and good quality of life (Naaldenberg et al.20012).” The way these different elements interact in the elder person’s life and their abilities to maintain a sense of identity, health, purpose and mental capacity are also going to be factors in their outlook on their aging process, for Tom all of these things are intact and he is enjoying his retirement and the freedoms and life changes it has afforded…
Assignment 1 option 2 - Physical Change and Health When people think about what is ahead of them in life they don’t usually think about the impairments of aging. These are central characteristics of life and can be detrimental aspects of our older lives; to truly understand what is in our future we must understand what the current elder population is going through now. Even though the average lifespan is increasing as well as the older population, this does not mean that the overall quality of life has improved as drastically. An overall declining immune system that doesn’t combat illness as well makes them a prime host for numerous chronic diseases. This makes them more than twice as susceptible to chronic conditions.…
As a 19-year old, it is quite difficult to imagine what my life will resemble when I am over 70 years old. Biologically, individuals represent an age of physical and mental functioning, rather than a specific age (Berk, 2009). Therefore, I hope that when I am around 70 years old, I have a functioning age a couple of years younger. Psychological forces may greatly effect my personality and temperament, in either a positive or negative way. I see myself remaining positive, by keeping healthy relationships and finding ways to stay busy.…
Journal 5: Adulthood and Old Age Personal: Adulthood and old age, from this session I reflected deeply about my life how I got where I am today. I can describe my experience as being a roller coaster, sometimes I go up and then all of a sudden I am down fallen everyone goes through good/hard moments in his or her life. When hard moments come, everyone will want to wish to go back to the good old times this why I describe life as being a roller coaster. The lifeline exercise we did in class, I could reflect better on my life I could see that although I might have some tough time in my life, I could identify that one person that was always there supporting me was my mother.…
