Adolescents that had mothers who suffered from severe mental illness, were the most likely to use illegal substances. Those children that were founded to have supportive parents that provided structure and guidance were less likely to engage in illegal substances. LGB adolescents are most likely to come out to their families and friends when they are in their teen’s years. During the coming out stage, adolescents are looking for acceptance from their families and friends. If they are not accepted then this can be devastating to the teen. Also, if the parents discover that the teens are LGB before they come out, then the adolescents are also more likely to begin using drugs and alcohol. LGB teens are more likely to deal with hate crimes, violence and partner relationship abuse. A lot of teens that may not come from supportive families might be in denial about their LGB feelings and may turn to drugs and alcohol to cope with their feelings.
