Moreover, it benefits the pharmaceutical industry since more diagnoses mean more sales and development of medicine. Therefore, the conflicts of interest between the DSM panel members and the pharmaceutical companies leads to an increase …show more content…
As mentioned before, through time societies have changed and moved from mechanical solidarity to organic solidarity. The organic solidarity illustrates a society where dependency is the key element; individuals in society are dependent of each other. If we take the process of diagnostication of a mental disorder, if an individual has health issues, he seeks professional help through for example a psychiatrist in order to treat these issues. These potential ‘patients’ do not have acquired substantial knowledge in the medical field, which is why they will automatically seek professional medical help. This explanation explains the organic solidarity of structural dependency. In addition to this, some of these individuals seeking help will get a diagnostication by a psychiatrist who has most likely applied the usage of the DSM, where it stated that there is a need of treatment in form of medication. Since the society in the U.S. thrives on wealth, there is as a result of pressure for the individuals in the society. Gagnon (2013) describes a model in the pharmaceutical industry’s business being based on over promotion of medication. Gagnon (2013) addresses some of the problematics of this over production, such as an off-label promotion of medicine prescription, kickbacks financial affiliations etc. This opens up to an interesting perspective on the production of medication, since Gagnon (2013) shares the point of how the promotion and marketing of medicine is non therapeutical and can affect the patient taking the medicine. The pharmaceutical industry receives a great amount of pressure from the structures in society which leads to deviance in terms of an outstanding behavior, which could be used to argue for the promotion and marketing of medicine. Moreover, there is another perspective to the structural strain theory, which can argue for the increase of mental disorders in the U.S. society. As mentioned, the U.S. society seeks success and wealth thus resulting into pressure. Therefore, the pressure that individuals in a society receive can be argued to be one of the reasons for mental disorders, furthermore increasing the mental disorders. However, all the aspects presented throughout the discussion, are elements that can interpreted differently. Nonetheless we have given
