But they also make us laugh, brings us joy, and satisfying our emotional hungers" ( "Marlene Caroselli Quote" 1). What Caroselli said is true because if people use the right words they make others happy, but if they use the wrong ones, they can destroy people. Words can especially hurt children, because they tend to take words more literally than adults; especially if those words are spoken in hate and not love. Words can truly hurt and it is not just Caroselli who thinks so. "The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit" ( Proverbs 18:21). Even i the Bible it says, that words have power help or harm. Words are very powerful, and the proof is everywhere including the Bible. Byrne 's poem Stick and Stones Poem - Rewritten is most known. " Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can also hurt me. Sticks and stones break only skin...but words can mortify me" (Sticks and Stones 2). Bryne wrote this poem in England of 1994, which tells people that children from all over the word have experienced the hurtful words of others. People can agree that the old nursery rhyme is falsely stated, because words do hurt and can affect people

In “To this Day,” Shane Koyczan claims that the names people get called hurt just as much as broken bones. In the poem Koyczan said, “As if broken bones hurt more than the names we got called,” He thinks that the rhyme sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt is untrue because he was bullied and he remembers how he felt. In the poem he said that he attempted suicide because someone told him to “get over it.” He said that he feelt like TNT lit from both ends, because of the words people said to him, he felt like he was waiting for the explosion to end his life. He said that every school has bullies that have a lot of different names to chose from, so that they could hurt people that were smaller than them in a new way.…

Even though children are innocent, more than 675,000 are victims of abuse and neglect. Because of rude and harsh comments, four children die every day. When older people purposely harm any child, it does not matter what age, race, or sex because a child is just a child and they contain no skills whatsoever to avoid said situation. All the children who get held back from going forward by the hands of abuse, die under the age of four or three because they have no motivation to keep striving for their life goals. When the public receives this picture, they immediately feel sympathy for the children, but do not pursue any means of action to stop the problem.…

The Power of Words in Marge Piercy’s “Barbie Doll” “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me!” This sing-song chant has echoed across school yards and classrooms in America for generations, often in retaliation of carelessly thrown phrases from bullies and friends alike. Despite its adamant positivity, the message proves to be less than reliable. No matter how many times the phrase is repeated, there is no escaping the fact that words do indeed hurt. In “Barbie Doll”—a poem by Marge Peircy—the main character is a young girl whose life is ultimately destroyed by the words of a junior-high classmate.…

The lecture on linguistic violence given by Dr. William Gay was very insightful to say the least. When Dr. Gay began his lecture, he invited the audience to question the truthfulness or lack thereof in the common phrase taught to children “sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me”, and how this phrase relates to the social ideology of our culture. This phrase implies that people should not be upset by or susceptible to verbal or written abuse brought upon them by others. I agree with Dr. Gay that this phrase is not the solution to the problems that many youth and adults are facing with bullying, verbal abuse, psychological abuse, et cetera brought on by this covert form of violence. While I agree that having the metaphorical…

Although some may argue that the statistics are insufficient to assume cyber…

Imagine being backed into a corner by a large bear that is roaring and screeching and over all, terrifying. Paralyzed and helpless, whatever is in that corner isn’t going to fare well against the bear. This is what verbal abuse feels like. The abuser attacks the victim, trapping them in a mental corner and paralyzing the victim’s brain until they are defeated, until the attacker feels like they’ve won, and the one abused gives up. Verbal abuse is damaging at any age, crippling functions of the brain and sinking the mental status into the deepest, darkest holes it can find until the state of mind is so low that there is no escape.…
