A cell is a very basic structural and functional unit of life. A human body is considered multicellular because the body consists of trillions of cells. Cells have many different functions throughout the body, and they ‘stem’ from simpler cells that do not yet have a specific function. These cells are known as stem cells. This basically means these cells do not have a specific job in body yet, but have the potential to become any cell in the body. Stem Cell research has been around for decades, and they are continuing to study what stem cells can do and the outcome, and what their benefits are. There are two different types of stem cells; embryonic stem cells and Adult stem cells. Here is what will be covered; what are embryonic stem cells and Adult stem cells? Where do they get these cells to do research? Why are they important? What is a stem cell transplant? What are the benefits? Why has stem cell research become a great concern?
There are two types of stem cells; embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells. Embryonic stem cells are produced when a newly fertilized egg begins to divide. These cells can become any type of cells in the body. Most embryonic stem cells are obtained from embryo’s that develop from eggs that have been fertilized in vitro- in an in vitro fertilization clinic, and then donated for research purposes with informed consent of the donors. These embryonic cells were not obtained from eggs fertilized in the woman’s body. The second type of stem cell is…
