“Man, a little piece of your creation, desires to praise you, a human being ‘bearing his mortality with him’, carrying with him the witness of his sin and the witness that you ‘resist the proud’. Nevertheless, to praise you is the desire of man, a little piece of your creation. You stir man to take pleasure in praising you, because you have made us for yourself, and our heart is restless until it rests in you” (Augustine 3). This quote from Augustine’s Confessions shows his views on humans and their desires to know God, rest in him, and be in harmony with his will for their lives. Throughout Augustine’s life he went through several conversions, stormy relationships and breakdowns before he arrived at God’s ultimate plan for his life, to become one of the greatest contributors to church history. Augustine’s ability to address controversial issues with honesty and truth had a great impact on both Protestant and Catholic theology during his time. Augustine 's influence on the church makes him one of the greatest, if not the greatest, father of the church.
Augustine Aurelius was born in A.D. 354 in Thagaste (Algeria). His mother was a Christian while his father was a pagan. Augustine had a strong interest in rhetoric and philosophy and left home in his teens in order to study in Carthage.
