My mom grew up in Long Island, New York and was the only girl in her family for most of her childhood. Because of this, she described her family as “uncultured,” and much of her time was spent outdoors or in playing sports rather than in radio, TV, and so on. She listened to records like Neil Diamond, Cat Stevens, The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, and Joni Mitchell. California based group the Beach Boys was one of her favorites. She discovered artists pretty much solely through her peers. This is still true of many kids’ music experience today, but the iPhone and the internet have forever changed how music is discovered.

TV:
Especially in comparison to radio, TV seems to have had much more of an influence on my mom as a child and teen. This is likely partially because she is a very visual learner, and because TV was simply used more often than other media in her family’s home. My mom was born after TV first became available, and she remembers the reception as being good compared to how most TVs were at the time.
Her family made a habit of watching TV together. She remembers these times as her parents sitting behind her in comfy La-Z-Boy chairs, while she and her brothers sat or lay on the rug in front. While she cannot recall exactly how much her parents spent on their first TV set, she would guess the price was somewhere around $200. Her parents valued quality and would have spent a little more to ensure that they were purchasing a quality TV
