It also taught that peers can have an influence on deviance through peer pressure or by sending out the wrong messages. In our textbooks, they explain that there does seem to be a correlation between social influences which is called differential association. Differential association is explained in our textbooks as " different groups with which we associate give us messages about conformity and deviance. We may receive mixed messages" Henslin (2011, pg. 137). This states that we our peers and the groups whom people associate with have an influence on deviance which my article is also about, on how social and peer have an influence on deviance. This influences me by teaching me that there can be many reasons as to why a person falls to deviant ways and commit deviant acts. This means that there is a reason to why they have fallen to deviancy which most likely is due to their peers or with whom they associate with. Structural strain theory is when the outcome of a strained person in society is caused due to the lack of needed to achieve cultural goals which is not provided by society. Because the induvial is not provided with the appropriate tools needed to achieve their cultural goals they fall into deviant behavior I order to achieve the goals that expected to be accomplish in the society. The reason I chose this concept was because after covering this topic in the course I can now see that civilians are not always at fault with how they live since sometime the government many fail to help the people succeed by not preparing them or providing them the right resources needed. I related this topic to how during our time in high school we were never taught about mortgages or how to do our taxes yet once we get out of high school we are expected to know what they are and how to do them. It just shows the importance of how the government must meet halfway with their people if they wish to see their country
