The world we live in today would be unrecognizable to someone living not even 10 or 15 years ago. Smartphones and a handful of social media platforms have dramatically changed the way we communicate with one another. In our schools, it would be impossible for teachers to teach a classroom of students without the aid of the internet and computers. Automated jobs have eliminated whole job markets with factories filled with robots and machines. Now, though, we have come to a point where our transportation systems might see a similar shift. Autonomous vehicles (AV), more specifically self-driving cars, and the technologies that surround them have been on the rise in the last few years, with some even already on our roads today. Because this technology is still in its infancy with a lot of questions still unanswered, the implementation of AVs in our society has brought with it some debate. Those against autonomous vehicles argue that this technology could be potentially disruptive; bringing with it more costs to consumers and ethical challenges that have never existed before (Litman 4). Those in favor of a driverless future, though, say that the benefits that AVs could bring to the way people live their lives outweigh all negatives that could be brought on in the early stages of utilizing self-driving cars in our everyday life (Fagnant 1).
