Anxiety and social anxiety in general is a negative mood state, characterized by bodily symptoms of physical tension and apprehension about the future. This study sought to investigate the relationship between heavy alcohol consumption and social anxiety in 100 undergraduate college students. In an attempt to better understand the relationship between social anxiety and alcohol we also used gender. A random sample of both males and females from which 50 claim to suffer from social anxiety was drawn from Barkley College students. The data for the study was from a questionnaire, which elicited information on gender of respondents, an anxiety scale as well as a self-report measure of drinking behavior. Some studies have suggested differences in motivation for drinking, expectancies of alcohol use, and gender as covariates.
This research has been interesting but not entirely surprising, some of the studies and findings weren’t all too astonishing because I expected some of what was mentioned already, this may be due to my own knowledge and experience with alcohol consumption and anxiety, for I have seen many situations that can be related to what was mentioned in this study. One thing I would like to see more of in regards to anxiety and alcohol consumption is a specific correlation and gender comparison between why males and females consume alcohol for a set reason and are they influenced by the opposite gender to drink
