Smoking has serious health implications for both the active and passive smokers of substances like cigarettes both at the national and global stages (Schmidt 413). For, according to organizations and agencies such as the World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the use of substances such as tobacco is one of the leading causes of preventable diseases such as lung cancer and also premature death (CDC Online). According to the American Heart Association, nearly ninety percent of all cases of lung cancer in the US are linked to smoking and also a third of deaths resulting from coronary heart disease are caused by active and passive or second-hand smoking (Online). …show more content…
Moreover, given that smoking leads to addiction and also other harmful behaviors such as drug and substance abuse, criminal behavior and violence, it should be banned to make it more difficult for people to have access to it in the public places. For, in institutions such as schools, allowing smoking would endanger not only the public health of students but also promote criminal and other unacceptable behaviors among the school going children. According to Proctor some of the reasons smoking should be banned are that cigarettes are a dangerous and defective product that does not have any known health or any other benefit of human beings (27). They may argue that the cigarette manufacturing companies make a substantial contribution to the national economy regarding revenue in taxes and employment of millions of people. Banning smoking will reduce the profit margins of these firms or drive them out of business hence leading to a disaster economically. However, such a claim may be refuted by arguing to the contrary that because its adverse effects on the health of the entire population ought to weigh its contribution to the economy, there can be no justification for continued smoking in public
