Therefore, in many cases the slaves did like to retaliate often and assaulted their owners by using acts of violence or stealing from their masters. This was a form of overt resistance that the tactics slaves used. The group of rebel slaves would attack in usually small groups and they would even take food from there owners hands and then run off. Usually, though when the slaves did try to up rise a rebellion were easily put to an end and the leader of the group was punished by death or was threatened to be sold and taken away from their family.
When this resistance failed the slaves used a more secret, disguised form to play tricks on their master. This resistance that they used was covert which was more “I oblige but I do not comply” (Spencer 235).The slaves would pretend to be dumb or showing slowness of pace when they worked or even lied to their masters. Some of them would even fake illness to get out of their strenuous labor. This resistance felt safer to the slaves because they knew they would not get killed by just pretending to get out of
