Slavery has existed for thousands of years Millions of men and women have been taken into captivity to work for a living, it has also existed in the United states since 1865. The north using slaves and immigrants for industry and the south using the slaves for agriculture. During this time, children were taken away from their families, and have worked until they die. Only to get replaced with another slave without a care in the world. They not only were treated lower animals, but were not even given the simple acts of human rights. Slaves were treated so inhumane during this time that owners would separate them from their families so that they would infringe a fear on their owners. This was the main reason the slaves were treated badly because the Slave holders wanted there slaves to have a fear of their slaves so they would be afraid to cross them. One of the ways that this was used is by whippings, anytime the slaves were to do anything that the slave owners did not agree with they were allowed to whip them, because they were considered the slave …show more content…
On document 5 there was a picture of masks that were used to stop a slave from running away. These masks were made of pure metal which were worn in the hot south during the summer with the sun beaming down on them. Which means that the mask was burning hot on the slaves skin. The mask also contained arrow like metal points sticking out stopping them from running away, or hide. The article also depicts anklets showing metal cuffs that held your wrists close together so it would be uncomfortable, and anklets that had blades around it so that if they were to run away it would cut their skin. This truly shows the amount of respect that the slave owners had their slaves. This punishment was given to them based upon the owners own judgment, meaning that if a slave were to even look at them in a rude or derogatory way they could be
