Simply because the article is discussing the possibility for citizens to have their own ideal family; regardless of physical or biological limitations. As previously mentioned, many individuals do not have the ability to create their ideal families because they are single or homosexual. Bodkin mentions in the article that Dr. David Adamson states, “The definition of infertility is now written in such a way that it includes the rights of all individuals to have a family, and that includes single men, single women, gay men, and gay women (2016).” That being said, it is clear that people do not necessarily want to abide by the traditional activities for creating their own family. Therefore, having the definition change will make it possible for families to form outside of the traditional family forming activities. This perspective argues, according to Johnson and Rhodes, that “Systems are constantly changing, but that these change processes are incremental and are self-correcting when the system gets out of balance (p.11).” Bodkin employs this perspective through by presenting this definition change to readers in order to show how this is an act to maintain balance in society. The act being an attempt for everyone to have an opportunity to create their ideal family, regardless of sexual orientation or relationship status. Although Bodkin is suggesting that this definition change is an act to maintain balance and fairness, he is implying this action will also create imbalance as well. Classifying more individuals as infertile will not only decrease the chances for individuals classified as infertile under the old definition, but will create an increase in the amount of children raised in single parent households; possibly eliminating the biological process of conception. Overall, changing the definition of infertility could create challenges society is unprepared to handle.
