Lennie fantasizes about owning a homestead with George and living off what they produce on their land. He is continuously asking George to tell him the story of how they will buy the plot of land and live off that land. Most importantly he dreams of having rabbits that he can tend and pet on their farm—tending the rabbits is all that he can ever think about. Lennie, who is mentally handicapped, is constantly doing brainless things that get him in trouble. For example, while Lennie is working on the ranch in California, Curley’s wife comes to him looking for friendship and allows him to pet her hair. When she tells him to stop, he panics and does not let go. He attempts to cover her mouth to stop her from screaming but is too rough and ends up accidentally breaking her neck. Lennie is very dependent on George because due to his level of intelligence. He looks to George when he does not know what to so, especially when he feels pressured. He needs George to tell him what to do because he cannot think on his own. When Curley wants to fight Lennie, he will not fight back until George tells him to fight
