Silvio Berlusconi is an Italian politician and media tycoon who served three times as Prime Minister of Italy. Berlusconi is the longest-serving post-war Prime Minister if Italy and third longest-serving since Italy’s unification, holding three separate terms. Berlusconi is also the controlling shareholder of Mediaset and owner of A.C. Milan, one of the most successful soccer teams. In 2012, Forbes magazine ranked him as the 169th richest man in the world with a net worth of US$5.9 billion (Forbes).

Political Career
The political career of Silvio Berlusconi began in 1994, when he entered politics for the first time serving intermittent terms as Prime Minister of Italy. His career was racked with controversies and trials. Amongst these was his failure to honor his promise to sell his personal assets in Mediaset, the largest television broadcaster in Italy, in order to dispel any perceived conflicts of interest. Berlusconi announced his decision to enter politics by presenting his own political party, Forza Italia, on a platform focused on defeating the Communists. His political aim was to convince the voters that Forza Italia offered both novelty and the continuation of the pro-western free market policies followed by Italy.
Silvio Berlusconi has an extensive record of criminal allegations, including mafia collusion, tax fraud, false accounting, corruption and bribery of police officers and judges. He has been tried in Italian courts in several cases (Vanity Fair). In three of these cases accusations were dropped by the judiciary because of laws passed by Berlusconi’s parliamentary majority shortening the time limit for persecution of various offences and making false accounting illegal only if there is a specific damaged party reporting the fact to the authorities.
