As in the case of Jason, having an awareness of the client’s identities and multicultural background is key in helping Shakira build her strengths and helping me (the counselor) establish an understanding of the unique issues that concern her. To begin with, multicultural competence training can be beneficial to both the client and counselor. As a counselor, it will enable me to build rapport, respect, knowledge and awareness of my client’s cultural background. And like wise, it will help Shakira express her feelings, drawing out issues; turning negative experiences into optimistic stories of strength, accomplishment and positive resilience.
Additionally, I must become more aware of Muslims religious beliefs and cultural customs to avoid barriers and understand Shakira’s worldview. For culture and cultural norms shapes our worldview. Second, as her counselor, I must understand how their religious beliefs and customs contrast Western culture and how this might pose a challenge for Shakira in her daily life. Using the identities of religion and race, and based on Shakira’s written responses to the ten dimension on the model (R=religion/spirituality, E=economic/social class background/ S=sexual identity, P=personal style/education, E= ethnic/racial identity…etc.) during the next session, I would check for her response to questions such as: How might you work with those who are different from you?
