The idea and practice of sex tourism share a plethora of stigma and opposition. Intuitively, sex tourism is something frowned upon by society, and laws have been enforced to curb such informal activity. Yet, sex tourism is growing ever larger and profitable. Due to globalization, economic disparities and declining flight costs, sex tourism is expanding to many countries, and people are more accessible to such pursuit of leisure. As stated by Jill Yen in her article, The Body Matters, the emergence of sex tourism has brought about many international issues, like human trafficking, child prostitution, disease pandemic, and many other unfavorable problems. With that said, there has been many research and advocacy conducted to reaffirm the opposition to sex tourism. Over the year, most reports or discourse that I have encountered in regards to sex tourism have been one-sided, extremely weighted by the immorality of the practice.
