Self-defeating behavior is a natural human instinct to cope with challenging that we face in life, especially social exclusion. Four experiments were conducted, Experiments 1 and 2 regarded the anticipation of social isolation later in life would lead to risky behaviors. I felt the deception of these experiments were somewhat extreme, from an outsiders’ view, if I were a subject to receive such information regarding my future, I would find that to be damaging. Full debriefings were involved which does help the situation. Experiment 3 predicted social exclusion would lead to people making less healthy choices. Lastly, Experiment 4 showed that socially excluded participants procrastinated more. The last experiment I found was somewhat inaccurate because to measure ones likeliness to procrastinate based on a test that does not affect their lives does not seem like the best measure. Testing this with a school examination would be a better option. All of these effects were also mediated by mood and as predicted the more socially excluded the sadder mood they were in. Overall I found these studies to be very relatable, self-defeating behavior is something all people encounter.
