The video - 1 "Selective attention test" is a research that demonstrate a group of players with different color shirts passing a ball; it is asked to count how many times the people wearing white pass the ball. The video is an example of selective attention, which is (concentration closely on one particular thing and affect the way we perceive the surrounding world).
First the in the video, it is asked the viewers to count how many times the players in white pass the basketball. While watching this video, I was able to count 16 passes, which I miscounted. The person who is given direction fails to notify that the person asking for guidance was replaced. This research is an example of change blindness, which is a phenomenon that occurs when a change in a visual is introduced, and the observer does not notice. I believe the man fail to see the person asking for information because the man might have been preoccupied with other things in his mind and did not care about the physical appearance of the participant asking for information. It is evident that change in blindness can occur due to various factors. For example, if there is little difference between the subjects there will be a greater risk of change in blindness. For instance, in the experiment if the man is replaced by a woman there is a greater opportunity for the giver of information to notice the change of subjects. Change of blindness can affect our daily lives. In my work we are encouraged to report any ethical issue whether is concerning with customers, employee and management. I would agree if I had my antennae up I would detect an ethical issue. I believe most people when they enter the workplace for the first time they are hungry to succeed, thrive and get promoted. The eager to move up the ladder in the workplace can make some employees do things just to please their boss, which can make workers blind to the ethical issues. Employees might go extra miles to get things done ignoring the moral and ethical code.
