“According to the text, “I celebrate myself, And what I assume you shall assume, for every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you, I love and invite my soul,” (Line 1). This a quote from the poem, “Son of Myself” by Walt Whitman. What this quote from the poem is saying is that he celebrates himself and that everything that is good about him is also good to the reader in their self. He is saying that they should celebrate their self as well. He also talks about he is inviting and one with his soul. Walt Whitman was an American poet, essayist and Journalist. He was born on May 31, 1819 and died March 26, 1892. He was known as a humanist. The writing at this time focused on emotion versus reason and rationality. It also focused on the sublime. The common themes at this time was that beauty is found in things like the sublime and colorize. Furthermore, the individual was more important than the group. Also, they focused on folktales and mythology. They also idolized Native Americans. Transcendentalism was a subgroup of Romanticism, they had many of the same ideals and views. Moreover, they only consist of Americans. They believed in things like the universal soul and intuitive thought. To continue, they resisted anything dealing with authority. However, Realism was the opposite of this. Realism was the era of American literature directly following Transcendentalism from 1865 to 1910. This was a time where writers focused on reality. They were writing less on the leisure class and making their writing more about the Proletarian or Lumper proletarian class. Furthermore, literacy increased during this time.
