Although slavery was abolished since 1865 people were certain and hopeful that the African Americans would be considered as equals with equal rights, but it wasn’t that simple or as easy as it sounds. They still weren’t given the same opportunities as the whites, and segregation continued to be practiced. We can learn this from a fictional, but realistic book written in 2002, Roll of Thunder Hear my Cry, that shows that the black community was treated unequally and poorly than the white community, and the officials did nothing to stop it. Something to keep in mind is that the setting of this story is in Mississippi in the 1930’s. This book shows many examples that prove the conclusion that the black community was treated unequally and poorly. One example this book shows is that the students of Cassie’s (main character) school were given used books and other school supplies from the white schools(Taylor). This just goes to show that the Board of Ed. and school officials don’t care too much for the black community so what they will do is give the kids hand me downs, and not to mention this is not the only thing the school doesn’t care about, as an example they don’t provide the black schools
