One of the Characters in the story Mary or Cassie’s mom stood up for her belief. The school she worked at was a black school and didn't receive much of supplies from the county or anybody. When they did receive books for study, they were hand- me downs from the nearby white school. They had offensive terms to black people written throughout them. Cassie’s mom took matters into her own hands even though she knew it could get her fired. On page 30 mama says, “ but that doesn’t mean they have to accept them . . . and maybe we don’t either” referring to the books she had just glued over the offensive terms in. People have always been jealous of the Logans having all that land and being black. Many people, like the Wallaces and
Mr. Granger, try to take that away from them but Logan’s fight back. On pages 169-170 and page 88 Mr. Granger tries to negotiate with Papa and Big ma to buy the land. That Mr. Granger's plan doesn’t seem to work because the Logans do not back away from their pride in the land even though times are tough living near the Great Depression. The Wallaces have another plan. They get mama fired from her job and the Wallaces shoot papa in the leg so he is also unable to earn money to pay the taxes. Uncle hammer steps in and pays the money for now. The Logans wouldn’t let their land go for anything and they stood up to the folks trying to take it
