When it comes to leftover emotional pain from our earliest relationships, no one will trigger us like our romantic partner. How many times have you found yourself saying something in a moment of anger that later you regret? How is it we find ourselves lashing out at the person we value the most? Our closest relationships tend to be the biggest challenges in our lives. Mindfulness allows you to relax and have an open mind. It also allows you to handle problems in a manner where it benefits you or the relationship. With the help of mindfulness “Mindfulness decreases ego involvement” says Michael Kernis from the University of Georgia. People are less likely to involve their self-esteem to situations and just take things as it is. They will acknowledge the situation with better judgment rather than aggressively. For example, imagine being triggered by your partner. Picture yourself getting heated, anger growing as the seconds go by, and everything just feeling wrong. Now imagine being able to feel your emotions without reacting in the moment. Now see how it will feel to be able to observe your emotions and thoughts without getting caught up in them and being able to keep a balance. This allows you to …show more content…
In the article The Role of Mindfulness in Romantic Relationship Satisfaction and Responses to Relationship Stress, two studies were conducted on whether this statement was true. Study 1 found that higher trait mindfulness predicted higher relationship satisfaction and to relationship stress. Study 2 extended these results. Mindfulness was then proven to show relationship satisfaction and predict lower emotional stress responses. Both studies indicated that mindfulness may play an influential role in romantic relationship well- being.
