To outsiders, absolutely. For those of us in the Rocky Horror Picture Show community, not so much. While we project fun, silliness, and freedom onstage for audiences every Saturday night at midnight, backstage is a completely different story.
For my part, I joined my cast of The Rocky Horror Picture Show a few years ago, after being a fan and follower of the film and stage show for more than 14 years. The documentary, called Rocky Horror Saved My Life, shares the stories of performers of The Rocky Horror Picture Show from all over the world. The title of the documentary is ironic, though, considering the state of the community. Too often, we forget that while Rocky Horror does save lives- bullying ends them. We need to work as a community to protect that security that so many of us feel when we’re onstage, and to prevent anyone from feeling unsafe when they’re at the show.
Rocky Horror started as a way to escape the persecution of society and freely explore ourselves without fear of judgment, and it’s become an oasis for the pariahs of the world. The last thing we want is to destroy that legacy by becoming just as bad as the tormentors we’re trying to escape from.
