In the book, Kozol focuses mainly on the schools within New York City. While he does mention some schools in other places such as New Jersey, the majority of the book focuses on schools in areas like the Bronx. …show more content…
He visited sixty schools to research the problems that they faced and in doing so, he interviewed many people (Kozol, 2005). At the end of the book, there is a bibliography that states every source used in the books and some notes about the sources. Providing this list of sources increases Kozol’s credibility on this subject. Therefore, Kozol’s background and his use and proper citing of all the information he used to write the book make him an authority on the subject.
In the beginning of the book, Kozol first describes his experience with education and his goals for the book. His goals are to show how isolated many children of minority have become when it comes to public education. They do not receive quality education like children of the majority would. He first starts off with a child he met in 1994, Pineapple. When Kozol met her she was in Kindergarten. Pineapple’s school experience was not going well because of the poor quality of education she was receiving. However, at one point she asked Kozol a question that he did not expect. She asked him what the “other people” were like, referring to the school in Massachusetts, where Kozol was originally from. Of course when she said “other people,” she was referring to white people.
