Most people think that body alterations are very dangerous. They think there should be more laws concerning them. When they hear cosmetic surgery or tattoo they instantly think of something dangerous. To some, tattoos and piercings are signs of a “bad person”. However, body alterations are very safe and these things don’t change a person’s personality or make them a bad person. The government does not need more laws and restrictions on concerning cosmetic surgeries, tattoos, and piercings.
Body alterations are the deliberate altering of the human anatomy or human physical appearance. (“Body Alterations”) Body alterations were introduced to North America in the 1970’s. Cosmetic surgery dates back to the ancient civilizations and tattoos originated almost 10,000 years ago. (Blair) This topic has changed over the years because it has become more sanitized and safer. People pay lots of money to body modifiers to modify what they want on their body. For example, every year about $1.65 billion is spent on tattoos. (“75 Radical Facts about Tattoos”) This means if laws and restrictions are created this price will go down lots and many people will be unemployed.
The second reason for no new laws and restrictions on body alterations is because tattoos can raise a person’s self-esteem and can also boost confidence about themselves. A study was done on women with multiple tattoos and they report higher self-esteem than a woman with no tattoos.
