In the modern time of 2015, it is not uncommon to see people with neck, sleeve, or hand tattoos. It has become acceptable as “normal” in our society. However it is uncommon to see people in professional work places with these kinds of visible tattoos. That is good and all, but it does not show any level of professionalism. There is a famous saying by unknown author that says, “sometimes the nicest people you meet are covered in tattoos and sometimes the most judgmental people you meet go to church on Sundays,” this quote helps to examine how looks doesn’t matter but action does. Having tattoos shouldn’t be considered against social norms and value because tattoo should be looked as freedom of speech or of expression. In Ronald P. White’s article “The Art, the First Amendment and the Courts” helps demonstrates how tattoos and the art of tattooing are forms of pure expression fully protected by the 1st Amendment which helps protects freedom of speech. These permanent designs, sometimes plain, sometimes elaborate, always personal markings have served as amulets, status symbols, declarations of love, signs of religious beliefs, adornments and even forms of punishment. Simply because someone made the decision to get a tattoo does not mean necessarily that they are incapable of performing the tasks ask of them in the job titles description. Tattoos and intelligence have absolutely no relevance to one another. In my opinion tattoos should be openly accepted, simply because they are a form of artistic expression and individuality. I being an individual in the category of those with tattoos don’t see a problem with them in the work place perimeters. Self expression is a big part of what makes us special people.…

Is there a difference between men having tattoos in the workforce compared to women? Men are seen more as a punk rock kind of life style where women are not, so if you are going to be a wild woman a lot of the social norms would like to see you as lady like in the streets and visible tattoos make that impossible in some eyes. Despite what people say the main reason people do not get hired in the workforce because of body art is usually due to the location. If a man has a neck tattoo he is more than likely not going to get hired but if a women has one she might get hired because she can cover it up with long…

To Hire Ink or Not To Hire Ink Audience: My audience is business owners who are not overly religious and have a more conservative traditional view about what the employee work appearance should be. They would be willing to start looking at the qualifications of an applicant as opposed to judging them on personal appearance. They are right now most likely to pass up a person with tattoos based on stereotypes about the type of person who would have tattoos. I believe that business owners are just trying to do what is best for their businesses but might be missing out on someone who would be a valuable addition to their staff. While I do agree that there needs to be limits as to what is acceptable…

It’s all a classic case of judging a book by its cover, these workplaces and customers are assuming they know who and how this person is based on how they look and present themselves.
