If you read the Code of Hammurabi, you will see that certain laws where for the government. This mean that the Mesopotamian people had a government system that made sure that trading, laws, selling lands and business weren’t mistreated or abuse. For example, “If the highwayman has not been caught, the man that has been robbed shall state on oath what he has lost and the city or district governor in whose territory or district the robbery took place shall restore to him what he has lost” (Law #23). The laws of Code of Hammurabi are teaching us that the Mesopotamian people weren’t wild savages but rather civilize people who had a government system that was keeping everything in check. The laws in the Code of Hammurabi were able to teach us how Male and Female were different. “If a man’s wife, living in her husband house, has persisted in going out, has acted the fool, has wasted her house, has belittled her husband, he shall prosecute her. If her husband has said, “I divorce her,” she shall go her way; he shall giver her nothing as her price of divorce. If her husband has said, “I will not divorce her, “he may take another woman to wife; the wife shall live as a slave in her husband’s house” (Law #141). This law taught us that females had no saying in certain matter and that they had no respect as well. The men’s in the Mesopotamian society were basically the rulers of the land. The Male and Female relations weren’t only on male and female but also on father and son. For instance, “If a son has struck his father, his hands shall be cut off” (Law #195). This law is teaching us that the Mesopotamian were strict upon discipline and making sure that the kids listen to their parents. The Code of Hammurabi and all its laws are the base ground of archeologist on learning about the Mesopotamian society.
