The code of Hammurabi was created by the ruler of Babylonia, King Hammurabi. King Hammurabi ruled from 1792-1750 BCE. Apparently, King Hammurabi received the rules from Shamash, a son god. The laws that were given to King Hammurabi consisted of two hundred and eighty two laws (Cole and Symes). Hammurabi’s code was targeted to specifically deal with normal day to day life. The code told of punishment for any type of offense given. Hammurabi’s code was one of the first ever forms of written laws. The laws were scribed in cuneiform, it was then carved in Akkadian on steel and displayed publicly despise the lack of literacy. The original purpose of the code of Hammurabi was to create equality, but instead it showed the superiority of the rich. The laws all differentiated based on the social classes, despise the original intent of the laws to create equality. The code of Hammurabi specifically created morals for the people of the empire. The code of Hammurabi is considered innovative. It’s considered innovative because it’s the first set of laws in history. This was very innovative, it was the first set of laws that govern humans and their existence. It was quite successful because there’s not a nation without some type of government and laws instilled. The code of Hammurabi doesn’t offer protection for all the classes. The only class that is protected is those who were wealthy, the aristocratic. The weak and the poor did not compare to the wealthy. The wealthy could just offer money to pay their consequences, but the poor had no choice but to face the consequences. The poor were not treated equally, nor was women or children. The Hammurabi was supposed to bring about equality but instead it just gave the rich more power and divided the classes
